One of the first things I tell clients during consultations is that not all upgrades are created equal. Some changes immediately catch the eye and elevate the entire room, while others go relatively unnoticed. Understanding where to invest your budget makes all the difference.

Updated fixtures and hardware are among the most cost-effective ways to modernize any bathroom. Swapping outdated faucets, drawer pulls, towel bars, and light fixtures for contemporary options creates an instant facelift. Choose finishes that complement each other—matte black, brushed gold, or polished nickel—to create a cohesive, designer look without the designer price tag.

Fresh paint is another powerful tool in your renovation arsenal. A new coat of paint can brighten a dingy bathroom, make a small space feel larger, or add personality with an accent wall. Consider moisture-resistant paint in calming neutrals or on-trend colors that reflect your personal style. Don’t forget the ceiling—a fresh coat up there makes a surprising difference.

Throughout my years in the remodeling industry, I’ve learned that the best upgrades serve double duty: they’re both beautiful and functional. This approach ensures you’re not just creating a pretty space, but one that truly works for your daily routine.

Improved lighting transforms both the functionality and ambiance of your bathroom. Replace a single overhead fixture with layered lighting—combine ambient ceiling lights with task lighting around mirrors and even accent lighting to highlight architectural features. Dimmable options allow you to adjust the mood from energizing morning routines to relaxing evening baths.

Smart storage solutions don’t have to cost a fortune. Floating shelves, decorative baskets, over-the-toilet organizers, or a fresh medicine cabinet can eliminate clutter while adding visual interest. A well-organized bathroom always feels more luxurious, regardless of its size or age.

As someone with an eye for design and a love for making spaces feel both functional and beautiful, I’ve seen how the little details can elevate a bathroom from basic to breathtaking. These finishing touches are where your personality can really shine through.

Updated mirrors serve as functional artwork in your bathroom. Replace a builder-grade mirror with a framed option, or add a decorative frame to your existing mirror for instant character. Consider shapes beyond the standard rectangle—round or arched mirrors are having a major moment and can soften the hard lines typical in bathrooms.

Textiles and accessories might seem small, but they pack a powerful punch. Plush towels in coordinating colors, a stylish shower curtain, a beautiful bath mat, and thoughtfully chosen accessories like soap dispensers and toothbrush holders create a pulled-together, spa-like atmosphere.

New cabinet fronts or a fresh coat of paint on existing vanities can save thousands compared to full replacement. If your cabinet boxes are in good condition, simply updating the doors, drawer fronts, and hardware creates a completely new look for a fraction of the cost.

Maximize Space: Smart Storage Solutions for Small Kitchens and Bathrooms

By Emerald House Design – Tulsa, OK

As an interior designer in Tulsa, OK, I’ve seen it all—tiny bathrooms bursting at the seams with clutter and small kitchens where just opening the fridge feels like a game of Tetris. At Emerald House Design, I’ve helped families across Tulsa turn these tight spaces into efficient, beautiful rooms that feel larger and work smarter.

Because the truth is, small doesn’t have to mean limiting. It just means you need to get clever with how you use your space. Whether you’re planning a remodel or just dreaming about one, here are my favorite smart storage solutions that can make a big impact in small kitchens and bathrooms.

1. Reimagine Your Cabinets

Let’s start with the backbone of storage: cabinetry.

In both kitchens and bathrooms, standard cabinets often waste a ton of vertical space. That’s why I always look for ways to take cabinetry all the way up to the ceiling. Not only does it draw the eye upward and make the room feel taller, but it also gives you valuable storage for less-used items like holiday dishes or backup toiletries.

I also recommend interior upgrades like pull-out drawers, vertical dividers, lazy Susans, and toe-kick drawers—yes, the base of your cabinet can store flat items like baking sheets or extra towels! It’s all about making every inch work for you.

2. Build Up, Not Out

When floor space is limited, I think vertically.

In kitchens, open shelving or narrow spice racks can be added above counters or between studs. In bathrooms, recessed medicine cabinets and built-in shower niches offer sleek, out-of-the-way storage that doesn’t eat into your footprint.

And don’t forget over-the-toilet shelving! It’s a classic for a reason. With the right design, it can blend in beautifully while adding a surprising amount of storage.

3. Make Your Island (or Vanity) Work Harder

In small kitchens, adding an island isn’t always possible—but when it is, I make sure it does more than just look pretty. Think deep drawers, built-in trash pullouts, or even a microwave drawer tucked out of sight.

In bathrooms, a floating vanity can open up the floor and make the room feel airier, but it should still offer function. I love incorporating hidden hampers or vertical drawer stacks to keep things organized and off the counters.

4. Create Smart Zones

No matter how small the space, smart organization makes all the difference.

In kitchens, I always design storage zones based on how you cook and live. Coffee mugs near the coffee machine. Cutting boards near the prep area. Spices within arm’s reach of the stove. This reduces clutter and steps—two things you don’t have to spare in a compact space.

In bathrooms, I often include drawer dividers or custom inserts so you’re not digging through a pile of cords and cotton swabs to find your toothbrush. Small changes, big peace of mind.

5. Don’t Forget Lighting and Power

Lighting may not be the first thing you think of when talking about storage—but trust me, it matters.

Under-cabinet lighting in a kitchen helps you actually see what you’re doing (without casting shadows from overhead). Inside-cabinet lighting in a bathroom makes getting ready early in the morning feel far less stressful.

And don’t forget about outlets! Built-in charging drawers or tucked-away power strips can keep cords off your counters while giving you the functionality you need—without the mess.

Considering a Remodel?

If your small kitchen or bathroom feels like it’s working against you, you’re not alone. At Emerald House Design, we believe your space should support your lifestyle, no matter the size. With the right layout and smart storage, even the most compact rooms can feel open, organized, and truly enjoyable.

Whether your style leans modern and minimal or cozy and classic, I’d love to help you reimagine what’s possible. Remodeling isn’t just about updating finishes—it’s about making your home work better for you.

Let’s design a space that doesn’t just look beautiful—but lives beautifully, too.

Top 5 Kitchen Layout Mistakes to Avoid in Your Next Remodel

By Emerald House Design – Tulsa, OK

As a designer, I can tell you—when a kitchen isn’t working, you feel it. It disrupts your rhythm, affects your mood, and can even drain your motivation to cook (or clean up). At Emerald House Design, I’ve helped homeowners all over Tulsa transform kitchens that once felt cramped, confusing, or simply outdated into spaces that function beautifully and feel just right.

Of course, no two kitchens—or families—are exactly alike. However, over the years, I’ve noticed some layout mistakes that show up time and again. So, whether you’re planning a full renovation or just rethinking how your space flows, here are five common pitfalls I always help clients avoid:

1. Neglecting the Work Triangle

Let’s start with a classic. The “work triangle”—which connects your stove, sink, and fridge—is an old-school design rule for good reason. These three areas are your kitchen’s main hubs. When they’re spaced too far apart or awkwardly arranged, you end up taking unnecessary steps and bumping into things.

That’s why, when I design a kitchen, I always begin by thinking about how you move. Do you enjoy cooking elaborate meals? Do your kids often hang out at your feet? Are you juggling dinner while checking emails at the island? In any case, your layout should support your real-life flow—not work against it.

2. Underestimating Storage

Next up: storage. Open shelving might look great on Instagram, but let’s be honest—most of us need space for more than just a curated row of white plates. Think: blenders, baking sheets, mismatched Tupperware, and that air fryer you swore you’d use every day.

Too often, I see homeowners misjudge their storage needs or place cabinets where they’re hard to reach. Instead, I create intentional zones. Your coffee mugs should live by the coffee machine. Your cutting boards belong near the prep area. Your mixing bowls should be easy to grab when you bake. Ultimately, it’s about making your kitchen not only beautiful, but smarter.

3. Overlooking Electrical and Lighting

Here’s something I say all the time: “You can’t cook in the dark, and you can’t charge a blender with wishful thinking.” I’m only half-joking.

Truthfully, lighting and outlets are just as crucial as cabinets and countertops. A well-lit kitchen improves not just aesthetics but safety and function. That’s why I always plan for the right mix of ambient lighting, task lighting, and outlets—exactly where you need them. That way, you’re not stuck using a flashlight just to find your blender cord.

4. Oversizing the Island

Kitchen islands are one of the most requested features I get—and for good reason! They add prep space, seating, and storage. However, bigger isn’t always better. I’ve seen islands so oversized they actually hinder the kitchen’s overall function.

Rather than focusing solely on size, I help clients find the right balance for their space. A great island should enhance your layout—not crowd it. With careful planning, we make sure people can move comfortably and the room still feels open.

5. Designing for the House, Not the People

Lastly—and perhaps most importantly—one of the biggest mistakes I see is designing a kitchen based on trends or resale value, rather than on how you actually live. Are you someone who cooks nightly? Or more of a reheat-and-go type? Do you need space for pets to eat? A nook for kids to do homework?

This is exactly why I begin every remodel with questions: “What do your mornings look like?” “Do you entertain often?” “Where does the mail pile up?” Your answers guide the design, ensuring the space serves your needs—not just a future buyer or a Pinterest board.

Thinking About a Kitchen Remodel?

Avoiding layout mistakes is just the beginning. In the end, your kitchen should make daily life easier—and feel like a place you actually want to spend time.

If you’re in Tulsa and considering a remodel, I’d love to help you create a kitchen that truly works for you and your family.
Common Bathroom Renovation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Hi there! I’m so glad you’re here. I’m the founder and lead designer of Emerald House Design Co., based right here in Broken Arrow, OK. I’ve been designing and remodeling bathrooms for years, and let me tell you—while these small spaces can make a big impact, they can also be full of surprises. Over time, I’ve seen a handful of common mistakes homeowners make during bathroom renovations, and I’d love to help you avoid them.

Here are five bathroom renovation mistakes I often see—and how you can avoid them with confidence (and style).

1. Ignoring the Home’s Original Character

One of the biggest mistakes I see is when a new bathroom design doesn’t flow with the rest of the house. I’m a big believer in honoring the original character of your home. Whether your house was built in the ’60s, the ’90s, or just a few years ago, it has a story—and your bathroom should complement it, not clash with it.

How to avoid it:

Take note of existing architectural features, finishes, and color palettes. A modern farmhouse bathroom may look stunning in a magazine, but it might feel out of place in a mid-century ranch. Instead, find ways to bring in timeless upgrades that enhance your home’s personality, not erase it.

2. Focusing Too Much on Trends

Trendy designs might look exciting right now, but they can date quickly—and trust me, nobody wants to re-renovate a bathroom two years later. As much as I love a good Instagram scroll, not every trend is worth following.

How to avoid it:

Invest in quality materials and a classic foundation—neutral tiles, clean lines, and well-made fixtures. You can still have fun with décor, hardware, or paint colors (those are easy to swap later), but keep your main choices timeless.

3. Skimping on Lighting

Bathrooms often get the leftover lighting plan in a home—and that’s a shame. Good lighting is everything, especially in a space where you’re getting ready for the day.

How to avoid it:

Include a layered lighting plan: ambient (ceiling), task (vanity), and even accent lighting when possible. Choose fixtures that not only match your style but provide enough brightness. And yes, natural light is always a win when you can get it!

4. Not Thinking About Storage

Pretty is great, but practical is better. A beautiful bathroom with nowhere to put towels or toiletries just doesn’t work for daily life. Trust me—your future self will thank you for planning ahead.

How to avoid it:

Consider built-in storage like niches in the shower, custom vanities with drawers (drawers > doors, always!), and shelving that feels integrated, not added as an afterthought. Even in small bathrooms, smart storage solutions make a world of difference.

5. Cutting Corners on Quality

I totally understand the temptation to cut costs where you can—but be careful. Bathrooms take a lot of wear and tear. When clients use budget fixtures or try to DIY tricky installs, they often end up paying more in the long run.

How to avoid it:

Spend your budget where it counts: plumbing, waterproofing, tile installation, and ventilation. If you’re going to splurge, do it on the things you use every day—like a great shower head or a durable countertop. These are the details that elevate your space and last for years.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, bathroom renovations don’t have to be overwhelming. With the right planning and a thoughtful approach, they can be one of the most rewarding updates you make to your home. I always encourage my clients to design with intention—keep functionality at the core, respect the history of the house, and make choices that will still feel good ten years from now.

If you’re in the Broken Arrow or Tulsa area and thinking about a bathroom renovation, I’d love to chat. At Emerald House Design Co., we specialize in creating spaces that feel like they’ve always belonged in your home—just elevated, updated, and uniquely you.

Thanks for stopping by, and happy renovating!

5 Easy Ways to Update Your Kitchen Without a Full Remodel

Kitchens are often the heart of the home. It’s where meals are made, conversations happen, and memories are shared around the table. But over time, even the most loved kitchens can start to feel a little tired. The good news is you don’t have to take on a full remodel to breathe new life into this important space. With a few thoughtful updates, you can freshen things up and fall in love with your kitchen all over again.

Today, I’m sharing five simple, timeless ways to update your kitchen without the dust, noise, and stress of a total renovation.

1. Swap Out Your Hardware

It’s a small detail that makes a surprisingly big difference. Changing out your cabinet knobs, pulls, and handles can instantly elevate the entire room. If your kitchen still has the same hardware it came with years ago, chances are it’s ready for an upgrade.

When choosing new hardware, lean toward classic finishes like brushed nickel, matte black, or antique brass. These options feel fresh but still timeless, and they pair beautifully with a variety of cabinet colors and countertop materials. The best part? This is a project you can likely tackle in a single afternoon with just a screwdriver.

2. Refresh Your Lighting

Lighting has the power to completely transform a room, and the kitchen is no exception. If your space feels a little dim or dated, consider replacing old fixtures with something that better reflects your style.

Look for pendant lights to hang over an island or sink, or a statement chandelier above the kitchen table. Even updating recessed lighting with warmer bulbs can soften the overall feel of your space. Stick with classic shapes and neutral finishes so your lighting will stand the test of time.

If new fixtures aren’t in the budget right now, a good cleaning can work wonders. Wipe down glass shades and dust ceiling fans—you’ll be amazed how much brighter your kitchen feels.

3. Add a Fresh Coat of Paint

Never underestimate the power of paint. It’s one of the most affordable and effective ways to refresh a room. Whether you’re updating the walls, cabinets, or even a small piece of furniture, a new color can instantly lift the entire space.

For kitchens, I always lean toward soft, neutral tones that create a calm and welcoming atmosphere. Shades of warm white, soft greige, or pale taupe work beautifully and won’t go out of style. If you’re craving a bit more color, consider a muted sage or dusty blue—they’re subtle enough to feel timeless but still add personality. Remember, painting cabinets can be a bit more involved than painting walls, so be sure to do your prep work if you go that route. But the results are absolutely worth it.

4. Incorporate Open Shelving or a Display Area

If you have a section of your kitchen that feels a little too heavy or cluttered, swapping out upper cabinets for open shelves can help lighten the space. Open shelving gives you a chance to display everyday dishes, pretty glassware, or a few favorite cookbooks.

If removing cabinets isn’t in the cards, you can create a similar effect by clearing off a countertop and styling it with a few thoughtful pieces—think a wooden cutting board, a vintage pitcher, and a simple plant. These little touches make your kitchen feel lived-in and loved without being overly styled.

The key here is to keep it practical and uncluttered. Choose items you actually use or genuinely enjoy looking at, and resist the urge to fill every inch.

5. Bring in Natural Elements

Adding a touch of nature can instantly warm up your kitchen and make it feel more inviting. Whether it’s a bowl of fresh fruit on the counter, a vase of seasonal greenery, or a wooden serving board leaning against the backsplash, natural elements add texture and life to the space.

You don’t need to go overboard—a simple potted herb on the windowsill or a bundle of fresh eucalyptus can make a big impact. These little details soften hard surfaces like stone countertops and tile floors, creating a balanced, welcoming feel.

Let’s Make Your Kitchen a Space You Love

Your kitchen should feel like a reflection of you and the people you share it with. You don’t need to follow every new trend or take on a full remodel to create a space that feels fresh and welcoming. Often, it’s those small, thoughtful updates that make the biggest impact.

If your kitchen’s been feeling a little tired, try a couple of these simple ideas — and if you’re not sure where to start, we’d love to help! Whether you need a little guidance or a hands-on refresh, we’re here to help you turn your kitchen into a space you truly enjoy spending time in.

Transform Your Bathroom Into a Relaxing Retreat: Simple Remodel Ideas

When life feels a little hectic (and let’s be honest, it usually does), having a space where you can unwind makes all the difference. And while most people think of their living room or bedroom as their go-to relaxation spot, there’s one space in your home that often gets overlooked – your bathroom.

With a few thoughtful updates, you can turn your bathroom into a calming, beautiful retreat you actually look forward to spending time in. No need for trendy tile patterns or over-the-top spa tubs (unless you want them). I’m talking about simple, timeless changes that elevate your space while keeping it practical.

If you’ve been thinking about giving your bathroom a little refresh, here are a few ideas to help you get started.

1. Start with a Soft, Neutral Palette

Color plays a huge role in how a space makes you feel. I always lean toward soft, neutral shades for bathrooms because they create an immediate sense of calm. Whites, creams, warm grays, or soft taupes are perfect starting points.

If your current bathroom feels a little too stark or too dark, consider repainting the walls in a gentle neutral. It’s one of the simplest and most affordable ways to transform a space. Plus, these shades are timeless – you won’t find yourself regretting them a year or two down the road.

2. Upgrade Your Lighting

Lighting can completely change the mood of a room. If you’re still working with a single overhead fixture, it might be time to layer in a few options. Soft wall sconces on either side of your mirror not only look beautiful but also provide flattering, even light. If you can, consider adding a dimmer switch. Being able to adjust the lighting to a softer glow in the evenings makes a world of difference when you’re winding down for the day.

3. Incorporate Natural Elements

Bringing a touch of nature inside always makes a space feel more grounded and peaceful. Think wood accents, woven baskets, or a simple vase of fresh greenery on the counter. If you have open shelving, use it to display neatly folded towels in earthy tones, paired with a small plant or two. It’s a simple way to add texture and warmth without cluttering up your space.

4. Swap Out Hardware and Fixtures

One of the easiest ways to refresh your bathroom without a full remodel is by updating the hardware. New cabinet pulls, towel hooks, and faucets in a finish you love can completely change the look and feel of the room. I tend to gravitate toward classic finishes like brushed nickel, aged brass, or matte black. These options have staying power and add a touch of understated elegance.

5. Invest in Quality Textiles

It’s the little things that make a space feel special. Investing in soft, high-quality towels, a plush bath mat, and a pretty shower curtain can instantly make your bathroom feel more like a retreat. Stick with neutral or classic patterns so your space feels cohesive and calm. Textures like waffle weave towels or linen curtains add interest without being fussy.

6. Keep the Clutter to a Minimum

A relaxing space is a tidy space. Take a little time to clear out old products, half-used lotions, and anything that doesn’t serve a purpose. Use attractive storage solutions like lidded baskets, glass canisters, or simple trays to keep the essentials organized but accessible. When your countertops and shelves are clear and thoughtfully styled, your whole bathroom feels calmer.

7. Add a Signature Scent

Never underestimate the power of a good candle or essential oil diffuser. A subtle, clean scent can instantly set the tone for a relaxing retreat.

Choose something light and timeless – think eucalyptus, lavender, or fresh linen. It’s a small detail that makes a big impact.

You don’t need a full renovation or a hefty budget to create a bathroom that feels like a personal retreat. With a few simple, timeless updates, you can turn an everyday space into a beautiful, calming part of your home that you truly enjoy.

If you’re craving a little refresh, start small. A fresh coat of paint, new towels, or a simple plant on the vanity might be all it takes to shift the energy in the room. And remember – your home should be a reflection of what feels good to you.

Spring Forward With A Beautiful Home Redesign

As the days grow longer and the air turns warmer, spring offers the perfect opportunity to breathe new life into your home. At Emerald House Design Co., we believe that a well-designed space can lift your spirits and make every day feel a little brighter. Whether you’re looking to freshen up a room or dive into a full redesign, here are some timeless ideas to help you welcome the season with style and comfort.

Simple Ways to Freshen Up Your Space

Sometimes, all it takes is a few thoughtful changes to make your home feel renewed. Start by letting in the light—swap out heavy winter curtains for lighter, airy fabrics like linen or cotton in soft neutrals. This small shift instantly brightens a room and connects you to the outdoors. Next, bring in a touch of nature with fresh flowers from the market or your garden. A simple vase on your dining table or mantel can add a burst of life and color. If you’re short on time, even rearranging your furniture can work wonders—try angling your sofa toward a window or pulling pieces away from the walls for a more open, inviting feel.

Decluttering is another easy win. Clear off surfaces, tuck away winter blankets, and donate items you no longer need. A clean slate not only refreshes your space but also your mindset. Finish it off with a deep clean—polish wood furniture, wash windows, and fluff pillows. These small efforts create a crisp, welcoming atmosphere that’s perfect for spring.

Timeless Design Trends and Redesign Tips

Layer Textures for Depth

A redesign can transform your home into a sanctuary that reflects your personality. One approach we love at Emerald House Design Co. is layering textures. Think woven rugs, wooden accents, and soft throws in subtle, earthy tones. This adds depth and warmth without relying on fleeting fads. Stick to a cohesive color palette—perhaps inspired by spring itself, like soft greens, warm creams, or muted blues—to tie everything together.

Rethink Furniture Placement

Furniture placement matters more than you might think. Instead of pushing everything against the walls, create conversation areas with a sofa and chairs grouped around a coffee table. It’s practical and encourages connection, making your space feel lived-in yet polished. If you’re considering a bigger change, built-in storage is a timeless investment. A custom bookshelf or window seat not only maximizes space but also adds character that lasts for years.

Upgrade Your Lighting

Lighting is another game-changer. Swap out harsh overhead fixtures for a mix of table lamps and floor lamps with warm-toned bulbs. It’s a simple way to create a cozy, inviting glow that works in any season. Thoughtful lighting placement can also highlight your favorite features, like a piece of art or a cozy reading nook.

Add Personal Touches

Don’t overlook the power of art or personal elements—hang a gallery wall of family photos or a large, meaningful piece that draws the eye. These touches make your home uniquely yours and add a layer of comfort that transcends trends. Keep it simple but intentional, and your space will feel fresh yet timeless.

Make It Your Own

Spring is all about renewal, and your home should reflect that energy. Whether you’re sprucing up with fresh flowers or reimagining a room with smart design choices, the goal is the same: a space that feels good to live in. At Emerald House Design Co., we’re here to help you find that balance—timeless yet fresh, practical yet beautiful. So, roll up your sleeves, open the windows, and let’s spring forward together into a home you’ll love.

Fall In Love With Your Space

If you’ve ever looked around your home and felt a little… meh, you’re not alone. Life gets busy, tastes evolve, and sometimes our spaces stop feeling like us. But here’s the good news: you don’t need a massive overhaul to fall back in love with your home. With a few simple tweaks, we can take what’s already there and turn it into something beautiful, practical, and timeless- because that’s what I’m all about. Let’s chat about how to rediscover the magic in your space, one doable redesign at a time.

See It With Fresh Eyes

Start by walking through your home like it’s the first time. What do you love? Maybe it’s the way the light pours through that big window or the quirky charm of your old fireplace. Those are your anchors—the soul of your space. My approach has always been about honoring what’s already there. We’re not here to rip it all out and start over; we’re here to build on the bones of your home and make them shine.

Rearrange What You’ve Got

Before you buy a single thing, try this: move your furniture around. Shift the sofa to face that window you adore. Tuck the armchair into a cozy corner with a lamp and a good book. I’ve seen rooms transform just by flipping the layout—it’s like a reset button for your space. It’s free, it’s simple, and it reminds you how much potential is already sitting right there.

Add a Timeless Touch

I’m a big believer in design that lasts. Trends come and go, but a solid wood coffee table, a classic neutral rug, or a set of linen curtains? Those stick around. Pick one piece you’ve been eyeing—something that feels like you—and let it ground the room. For me, it’s all about mixing in textures and tones that feel warm and lived-in, like a soft throw or a stack of ceramic bowls on the kitchen counter. Little updates like these don’t just look good today—they’ll still feel right years from now.

Make It Work for You

A space you love isn’t just pretty—it’s practical. If your entryway’s a mess of shoes and bags, add a sleek bench with baskets underneath. If your dining table doubles as a work-from-home desk, style it with a tray to corral the chaos. I’ve spent years redesigning homes for real people, and I know the best rooms are the ones that fit your life. Let’s tweak what’s not working and turn it into something you can’t wait to use every day.

Pick Your Big Wins

Here’s a tip I always share: think about where you want to spend most of your budget. What is a major pain point in your space?Do you desperately need new kitchen appliances that make cooking a joy, or maybe new floors that tie the whole house together? By keeping the rest of your design choices simple and thoughtful—like a fresh coat of paint or a cleverly repurposed shelf—you can splurge on those few areas that really matter. It’s about balance: stretch your dollars where they’ll make the biggest impact, and let the smaller, timeless details fill in the rest.

Bring In a Bit of You

Here’s where the magic happens. Add something personal—a photo wall of your favorite memories, a vase you painted at a pottery class, or even a splash of your go-to color. These touches don’t have to be big or fancy; they just have to feel like home. When your space reflects who you are, that’s when you’ll catch yourself smiling at it again.

At Emerald House Design Co., this is what drives me—helping people rediscover the joy in our homes. You just need a little vision and a willingness to play with what’s already yours. So, grab a cup of coffee, take a look around, and let’s make your space feel like love again.

New Year, New Style: Fresh Home Design Ideas for 2025

Happy New Year from Emerald House Design Co.! If you’re like me, the start of a new year gets you thinking about possibilities—and not just resolutions, but what your home could become. Maybe you’re dreaming of a kitchen that’s more functional for your growing family, or a bathroom that feels like a luxury spa instead of an afterthought.

Home design is personal—it’s about crafting rooms that not only look amazing but also make everyday life easier and more enjoyable. With 2025 here, it’s the perfect time to refresh your space and find a style that feels right for this next chapter of your life. Let’s dive into some ideas and practical advice to get you started.

1. Start with a Vision: What’s Missing?

Before diving into trends or picking paint colors, take a step back and think about what’s missing in your current space. Is your kitchen too cramped for hosting friends and family? Does your office lack the inspiration you need for those long workdays? Starting with the problem areas helps focus your redesign on what really matters.

Once you’ve identified the challenges, imagine what the ideal version of the space would feel like. Picture the kind of memories you want to create there.

2. How Do You Want Your Space to Feel?

Choosing a style and color palette for your space can feel overwhelming, but it’s about more than just personal preference. Consider the existing style of your home and the atmosphere you want to create.

For example, if you live in a mid-century home, a full farmhouse renovation might feel out of place. But if you love the airy, open feel of farmhouse design, you can incorporate elements of it while respecting your home’s original aesthetic.

Similarly, if you’re drawn to bright purples and blues but want your living room to feel calm and serene, opting for neutral tones like whites and tans as a base allows you to bring in pops of color through decor and accents.

The goal is to embrace trends in a way that remains timeless. We love helping clients strike that balance—keeping their homes fresh without feeling outdated in just a few years.

3. Make Functionality the Star

At Emerald House Design Co., we believe great design starts with how you use your space. Sure, it’s nice to have a beautiful kitchen, but what’s the point if you’re constantly bumping into your partner while cooking dinner? Functionality and beauty should work hand-in-hand.

For example, in a bathroom redesign, think beyond just looks. Would a double vanity make mornings easier? Could built-in shelves in the shower eliminate clutter? For kitchens, consider layout changes that improve flow, like relocating the sink or adding a larger prep area. Functionality isn’t glamorous to talk about, but when your space works better for your life, you’ll notice every single day.

4. Color: Be Bold, or Be Balanced

Color is one of the easiest ways to completely transform a space. If you’re nervous about going bold, start small. An accent wall in deep navy or emerald green can add richness without overwhelming the room. In kitchens, we’ve seen clients fall in love with cabinet colors like soft sage or even black—both of which add sophistication and pair beautifully with natural woods and warm metals.

For bathrooms, consider playing with tile colors or patterns. A bright blue shower tile or herringbone floor can add personality to a space that often gets overlooked. And if you’re hesitant about committing to a big color, swap in colorful accessories like rugs or curtains that can easily be updated.

5. Personal Touches Make All the Difference

No two homes should feel the same—your space should reflect you. We encourage clients to include details that tell their story. Maybe it’s displaying vintage finds from a favorite trip, hanging your kids’ artwork in your mudroom, or using reclaimed wood from a family barn. These personal touches add depth and make your house feel like a home.

In your office, for example, consider adding bookshelves for your favorite reads or a gallery wall of photos that inspire you. If you’re redesigning a kitchen, open shelving is a great way to display unique dishware or family heirlooms. These details make your space feel alive and uniquely yours.

6. The Storage Struggle: Solved

If there’s one universal truth about homes, it’s that you can never have too much storage. But storage doesn’t have to mean bulky cabinets or boring closets. With smart design, you can create storage solutions that look as good as they work.

We love custom built-ins for mudrooms—imagine a bench with hidden compartments for shoes, hooks for jackets, and overhead cubbies for seasonal gear. In the kitchen, pull-out pantry shelves or vertical dividers for baking sheets can make a world of difference. Even in bathrooms, adding niches in the shower or a vanity with extra drawers can keep the space feeling clean and organized.

7. Lighting: The Unsung Hero

Lighting can make or break a space, but it’s often overlooked. A well-lit room feels warm, inviting, and functional, while poor lighting can make even the most beautiful design fall flat. Layering light sources is the secret: combine overhead fixtures, task lighting, and accent lights to create depth and flexibility.

In a kitchen, consider pendant lights over your island for task lighting, under-cabinet lighting for added functionality, and a statement chandelier for ambiance. Bathrooms benefit from sconces that provide flattering light around mirrors. And for offices, a mix of natural light and desk lamps ensures you’ll stay productive no matter the time of day.

Let’s Make 2025 Your Home’s Best Year Yet

If you’ve been dreaming about a fresh start for your home, now’s the time to make it happen. Whether it’s a complete kitchen remodel or a small mudroom upgrade, Emerald House Design Co. is here to help you turn your ideas into reality.
